It is no secret that we are currently out of our “norm” when it comes to interviewing. Who would have thought that a simple handshake at your interview could be a huge no-no? Times have changed and we are in unchartered territory. But as we know, life must continue. This means that job searches must press onward and job openings need to be filled. How do we handle this new interview process? Will it feel weird to “meet” your potential boss via webcam rather than in person? In time, these processes will begin to feel more natural to all of us after we get over the learning curve. Here are some tips that will help you succeed in your next video interview!
- Take time preparing. It is extremely important to have your computer or tablet set-up in a quiet, well-lit and clutter-free location with stable internet connection. Consider using headphones with a built-in microphone to ensure you have the best sound quality. Maneuver and angle your webcam so that it shows your face clearly. You want to make sure you are somewhere free from distractions and interruptions. If you are unable to make it work at home, consider reserving a private room at your local library so you can have the best interview possible.
- Dress as if it were an in-person interview. Avoid bright colors and patterns. Wear neutral colors as they look the best on camera. Dress professionally and appear clean and well-groomed. You want the interviewer to know that you put time into preparing for the interview.
- Maintain professionalism across the board. Most video interviews are conducted over Microsoft Teams, Google Hangouts, Zoom, or another video service provider. Make sure you have a professional username and picture if you are using one of your existing personal accounts.
- Focus on the interview! Close all your other apps and tabs in your browser. Silence your cell phone and tune out any other potential distractions. Have a copy of your resume nearby along with any notes or questions you have for the interviewer.
Throughout all of this, don’t forget to be yourself. Tell your story and explain why you are the best candidate for this job. Many people are still landing their dream jobs during the pandemic – you could be next!
